Room & Record Get the free checklist

Everything about your home, written down once.

If your house burned down tonight, your insurer would ask for a list of everything inside it. Most people have nothing written down. Start with the free room-by-room checklist. If you live near Sacramento, I can make the whole record for you.

What the checklist covers

Ten areas, one walk through the house with your phone. Pick a room to see what to record there.

The checklist also covers how to get ready, how to film each room, and how to keep a copy somewhere that isn't your house.

Why do it before you need it

Your insurer will ask for the list.

After a loss, a claim asks for each item, how old it was, and what you paid for it. Without a list, you rebuild it from memory.

Memory is slow.

Fire survivors say rebuilding the list from memory takes well over a year.

California's new rule only goes so far.

Starting in 2026, after a total loss in a declared disaster, insurers must advance 60% of your contents coverage, up to $350,000, without an itemized list. Everything above that still needs one.

Who does the work

I'm Justin Keller. I live in Rocklin, and I do every Room & Record inventory myself.

I worked in cybersecurity at Bugcrowd and Palo Alto Networks. Your inventory lists what you own and where it is, so I treat it like security data. I keep it encrypted, and I delete my working copy once you have yours. It belongs to you, and I never share or sell it.

I also post short how-to videos on YouTube at @roomandrecordhome.

Only you, and anyone you choose to share it with, like your insurance agent. It's never sold or shared.

Is this insurance advice?

No. It's general information, not insurance or legal advice. Check your coverage with your insurer or agent.
